Holidays and Italian language courses on the Aeolian island of Alicudi

Total immersion in Italian life and language

An unforgettable study - holiday in Alicudi,  in the Aeolian Islands, in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, proclaimed by UNESCO World Heritage as an area of special interest.

Alicudi is a tiny island only two and a half kilometres wide. A small (steep!) uncontaminated paradise off the north coast of Sicily. Spring and autumn offer a host of wild flowers and migrating birds. Summer brings the heat of the Southern Mediterranean and sparkling seas. All year round there is a culture touched by Greeks, Normans, Romans, Africans, and, of course, Sicilians. The islands were a major grain producer and an important strategic passing point for the peoples of the past.

Alicudi is unique. A fascinating volcanic rock in the middle of the sea, inhabited by about a hundred people. They are the last of a population of 800 souls pushed by poverty to emigrate in the mid-twentieth century mainly to Melbourne, Australia, to abandon their old world houses that today, solitary and run-down, remind one of an ancient agricultural culture and have become an attraction for the adventurous tourist in search of something unspoilt.

The island has no roads and no traffic. It can be travelled over only on foot, along century-old stepped paths. August sees a little more in the way of tourism, but there is always a stretch of beach where you can find solitude and the quiet sound of the sea on the rocks. The water quality is fantastic, and marine life varied. Great for an hour or two of snorkelling or tanning. The mountain is rugged and grand. You can explore its wild beauty unfettered by fences and limits.

Would you like to share all this with me?

I would be delighted to welcome you to my home for an unforgettable study – holiday.

My name is Giovanna Mannino. For 20 years I worked as a qualified teacher of English as a second language in State Secondary schools in Padova, in northern Italy. A few years ago I moved to Alicudi to live in a restored old Aeolian house. Accommodation includes an independent room, with bathroom, kitchenette
and terrazzo;
the room can sleep up to 3 people. For larger groups, independent houses are available nearby.
My house is at about 180m above sea level, with a large terrace overlooking the sea; a deserved reward for the climb and offering dramatic views of the other islands in the Aeolian Archipelago. At night, the absence of street lighting  allows a breath-taking view of the stars.
